For a little girl with an active imagination, the Plaza Theatre became a 'palace for a young Princess.' What could have been more like a palace than a beautiful palace with red carpeting, gilded chairs with red velvet upholstery, ushers (who were my private pages) in red uniforms with gold trim? And there was the elegant "powder room" with big mirrors and velvet, cushioned chairs and stools for a private boudoir. With two of my best friends, we had as much fun playing pretend games there, as we did in seeing the movies.
Then of course, there were the Saturday matinees where, for a can of soup or milk, you could not only see a movie but get to meet "Uncle Roy" Chapman, the funny paper man from KTSM Radio. The organ would come up like magic, from the orchestra pit with all the lights and bells then we would sing "Fun Songs." My mom and dad always said the Plaza was a romantic place where they went on "special dates," when they had the money. They liked to sit in the side balcony alcoves where it was more private. They said they just liked to watch the little stars twinkle and the clouds drift across the ceilinged sky...I suspected they had other reasons!
